Dabbing is a way of consuming cannabis concentrate by heating it on a purpose-built surface and inhaling the resulting aerosol through a device.[1] The concentrate is often called a dab; the equipment may be a glass rig, an electronic rig, or a concentrate pen. Understanding the method starts with matching the material to the heater, then knowing when that device expects you to load it.
A jar labelled wax and a device labelled vaporizer do not, by themselves, establish a suitable combination. This guide explains the relationship between concentrate names, equipment and operating stages. It also separates the things a device can tell you, such as a selected heating mode, from things it cannot establish, such as an appropriate personal dose.

Concentrate names answer different questions
Some names describe how a concentrate looks or handles. Shatter is a brittle, glass-like form, while wax is softer.[2] Other names describe production: rosin is obtained using heat and pressure, and live resin is associated with freshly harvested plant material.[3] These descriptions can overlap. A production name does not necessarily identify one texture, and a texture does not tell you everything about production.
Puffco’s concentrate overview illustrates these distinctions with wax, budder, rosin and live resin.[3] Use those terms to understand a product description, then look for its stated ingredients, cannabinoid information and intended use. Colour, a strain name or a premium label does not provide that information on its own.
For equipment purposes, the important question is whether the material is intended for the chamber you have. Ask the seller about the intended use and ingredients before transferring material between product formats. A device may be designed for a particular material or delivery format. Opening another product and transferring its contents is not a substitute for a compatibility statement.
A useful question for the seller is: “Is this product intended for a concentrate chamber, and does its ingredient information identify anything besides the extract?” You are asking about the actual product, not whether wax or oil in general can be heated. Retain the container information so that you can identify the material later.

Producing a concentrate and using one are separate processes. Extraction describes separating compounds from plant material; dabbing describes consuming a prepared product.[4] You do not need to choose an extraction procedure to operate a rig. You need to identify the finished material and whether the equipment is designed to accept it.
Choose the instructions for the equipment you have
A glass dab rig uses a separate heating component, often a bucket-shaped banger. A torch-heated setup requires the operator to manage heating and cooling. An e-nail adds an electronic heater to compatible glass equipment. A standalone e-rig combines the heater and controls into a device. An e-nail and an e-rig therefore do not refer to the same purchase.[3]
There are also concentrate pens without the familiar glass water chamber. Their size does not establish what they accept. For example, Puffco identifies its Plus as a concentrate device and excludes dry herb.[5] That is a useful reminder to identify the intended material before using any vaporizer; it is not a rule that every pen or every electronic rig has the same restrictions.
Lay out the parts before adding material. Locate the heating chamber, mouthpiece, airflow opening, loading tool and any fitted cap. For a water-equipped device, identify the removable glass and its fill guidance. Knowing which opening leads to the heater and which leads to the airpath prevents a diagram for a different arrangement from becoming your assembly plan.

Loading and heating: why the order matters
In a conventional hot-start glass setup, the heating surface is heated before the concentrate is applied. In a cold-start arrangement, material is placed on the unheated surface first.[1] These terms describe the order of events. They do not identify a universal temperature, a heating time or a health advantage. The equipment must support the sequence being used.
Puffco’s introductory dabbing guide explains the familiar path from a heated surface through a rig. That mechanical overview helps explain what the accessories do. It should not be used to copy a torch-heating sequence onto a battery-powered chamber, where the device controls the cycle and may expect material to be loaded first.[1]
For an electronic device designed to be preloaded, the basic stages are as follows. They are an explanation of the workflow, with the device’s own controls supplying the operating details.
- Prepare the assembled device. Identify its charge indication, the seated heating component and the correct position of the glass attachment. Fill removable glass as specified, separately from electronics where the manufacturer requires it.
- Place compatible concentrate in the intended loading area with the appropriate tool. Keep loading separate from selecting a mode; a button sequence does not determine how much material has been put in the chamber.
- Fit the cap if the design uses one, select the supported heating mode and activate the cycle. Distinguish its warming indication from its ready indication before using the mouthpiece.[6]
- Know how to cancel heating and when the cycle ends. After use, allow the parts to reach the condition required for handling and maintenance before removing or cleaning them.[6]
The Switch² instructions provide a concrete example: glass preparation, loading, profile selection and heating are separate stages, and its lights distinguish warming from reaching the set temperature.[6] Those indications belong to that model. A similarly coloured light on another device could mean a different mode, a battery state or an error.
A heat setting is not a dose measurement
The selected setting describes part of the device’s heating operation. It does not measure the strength of the concentrate, the amount loaded or the amount a person absorbs. Likewise, a portion described as a grain or a dot is a visual comparison rather than a measured cannabinoid dose. Repeating a heating cycle and adding more concentrate are also different actions.
Temperature tools have different jobs. A controller changes heater operation, whereas an infrared thermometer measures surface temperature.[7] A separate thermometer does not adjust a banger’s heat. When comparing readings, identify what surface or sensor the number represents instead of assuming a controller display and an external measurement describe exactly the same location.
For a device with several adjustable settings, record their names separately: temperature, duration and any additional mode. This gives you an intelligible description if you need technical support. “It was on the second profile with the stock chamber” tells the manufacturer more than “I used the normal setting.” It also avoids importing a profile name from a different product generation.
Investigating an unexpected result
If an electronic device does not begin heating, first distinguish an error indication from ordinary warm-up. Note the light pattern or message and the installed chamber. Repeatedly pressing the activation button makes it harder to describe the original fault. A support request should state whether the problem happens before heating, during the cycle or only after a part has been changed.
If airflow feels obstructed, inspect the accessible airpath after the device has cooled. Look for a cap that is seated incorrectly, visible residue or an attachment that does not match the device. These are inspection questions, not a diagnosis from a distance. Increasing heat does not establish that an airflow obstruction has been resolved.
Residue in the chamber also needs interpretation. Its presence alone does not identify a failed heater or tell you the strength of the original product. Note whether the problem began with a different material, a replacement component or changed controls. Providing those details lets the manufacturer assess the equipment without guessing from the appearance of a single deposit.
Care follows the parts, not one universal cleaning recipe
The glass attachment, heating chamber and electronic base may require different treatment. Puffco’s Peak Pro care instructions, for example, separate those three components and distinguish where water is and is not used.[8] A cleaning liquid suitable for removable glass is therefore not permission to immerse an entire device. Plan where each removed part will dry before reassembly.
Finally, equipment instructions do not establish that dabbing is harmless. A laboratory study of terpene heating found substances of health concern under simulated dabbing conditions.[9] That study does not supply a universally safe setting or predict an individual’s exposure. Questions about whether cannabis use is appropriate for you belong with a qualified healthcare professional; a working heater cannot answer them.
